Odette leads us to an area called Clichy northwest of the city center.

While Kingsley drives our rental car, she explains that she lived with her father in a ground floor apartment in an area most people regarded as ‘less than nice.’ It isn’t a bad area per se, just not one any tourists would ever want to visit. Roughly a third of the apartment building burned as a result of her father’s battle with the imps. Unsurprisingly, a fire in a lower-income area that didn’t kill anyone hadn’t been international news.

According to the girl, the only reason the after-midnight fire didn’t kill anyone is her father using some kind of fear-based magic to terrify everyone into running away blindly, not realizing what had scared them so badly. Allison starts trying to talk shop with her about magic, but this girl is not technically a witch. Odette says something about drawing magical power in from another dimension and her father being a descendant of an ancient order that could trace its roots back to medieval times. Apparently, she thinks the whole King Arthur, Merlin, and Camelot deal happened for real. And… for reasons of wizarding secrecy, they encouraged it into the realm of myth.

As far as my thinking goes… with the Red Rider gradually siphoning all the magic out of our world, the sect of ‘wizards’ she’s referring to probably lost so much power they couldn’t do anything anymore, so even if they wanted to prove their existence, they had no ability to do so. Ergo, Merlin became a myth.

“Damn. I can still smell the char,” says Kingsley.

“But we’re still three blocks away. Wait, never mind. Werewolf.” Odette points out the windshield. “Take the third left up ahead.”

Yup, the big guy’s got one heck of a nose. That ought to let him track down any fire imps should they flee.

“Question,” I say. “You mentioned that your father sealed them in his lab using some kind of barrier magic? Do you have a way to get past that?”

“Yes. At least, I think so.” She manages a weak smile, kneading her hands in her lap. “I am not eager to see my father’s body, though.”

Kingsley opens his mouth, but closes it.

He doesn’t have to say anything for me to guess what thought hit him: the man’s body has probably already been reduced to ashes. Trapped in a room with a bunch of fire imps? Yeah, there wouldn’t be much of anything left intact. Tammy, picking up on either his or my thoughts, cringes, then makes a face that says ‘well, that’s better than seeing a dead guy.’

Minutes later, Kingsley pulls over and parks in front of an obviously burned building. I’d been expecting a traditional like apartment complex type deal, but the street appears to be lined with row houses. Everything here feels so small and squished together compared to America. Three of the façades show obvious fire damage, mostly in the form of smoke stains on the walls above broken out windows. Of those three, the far right one is the most messed up.
